yet more doodles

"You can't come in."

"Somewhere beneath the Earth's surface, the evil Doctor was masterminding a dastardly plan to rob students of their tuition fees"

"The littlest tree went to sleep, completely unaware of what was to become of him."

im basically making as much use of the computers and TVPaint here as I possibly can before I go home on sunday...

more doodles from today

been using TVPaint's pen brush a lot, comes out with a really nice effect i think. notice the emergence of santa onto TVPaint - a nice image, but i think the best thing about my original sketches was the effect given by drawing straight onto paper, and while TVPaint is good, it loses something about that character. but the backgrounds....need looking into, i think.

hey hey heres some monkeys

i know joonas posted a whole series of images on monkeys, but on a completely separate note i drew a gorilla the other day so decided to use it as an excuse to see how TVPaint works out. turns out, its pretty useful.

I really liked the simple background - mind you, for YEARS I've enjoyed the look and feel of reall simple backgrounds etc.

more to come later.
not sure what ive done to make the text go all big and funny...bloody blog.

To Santa, Love X

so it turns out "santa's first christmas" is actually not only a film, but an animated film as well, which is a pain. so the new working title is above - one of my friend's on the illustration course at ECA is going to do some pretty funky titles for me a think, only prospective ones at first but then if it all works out maybe 3D moulded titles, or something...i didn't really know what he was talking about but it sounded cool.
here's some of the more recent santa drawings, i've been working on the story kinda one "christmas card" at a time and all out of sequence, but i know what the overall story's going to be like.

This was one of the slightly more developed character sheets for the Dad character, who isn't happy with his son's present...

'"What's wrong with it?" Santa asked wearily. "It's the wrong colour" said the man, "he wanted blue". Santa wondered whether the kids who had nothing were this picky about colour.'

'Santa didn't really know what to do. "Go to bed" he grumbled. '

'And, to his complete surprise, she did.'

'Santa sat at home staring at the present the little girl had given him. He wondered why she bothered - noone else ever did.'

(-As usual, all work is copyright of Dan Castro 2008-)

Santa's First Christmas

The snow in Tampere reminded me to design a Christmas card for my parents as part of their annual Chrimbo present. I was playing with charcoal anyway, so i started doodling, and I'm actually really proud of this - I started developing the story for 'Santas First Christmas' straight away, illustrated book perhaps?

all done in charcoal, biro and oil stick.

and the final version..

spending so much time at college in the last few days has really forced me to doodle!

Meet me in Outer Space

Another sketch from Sketchbook Pro, just been listening to too much incubus really. needs work, obviously, and maybe photoshop would be better for the colours...was just experimenting really. Go airbrushing, woop.

Joonas' monkey

this is a copy of a sketch done by one of the tutors at college, i fully acknowledge it's not based on my imagination. it was just copied to test Sketchbook Pro, a new programme i downloaded. just me playing around, i thought it was quite nice though. maybe i'll draw a badger, or an owl.

Eat Your Greens (working title)

A couple of concept drawings for the IMP film Eat Your Greens, to be made with mixed media and animated in charcoal and after effects.

The story is about a farmer who every year wins the county Vegetable Growing competition. So he massages his vegetable with his special fertiliser, and watches it grow...until hunger strikes. He has two choices - eat his prize vegetable, or find something else to much on....
